All are welcome to the Chowanoke Descendants Community! This is a place of learning and cultural celebration! As you probably noticed the site is geared toward descendants and suspected descendants of the Chowanoke Indians, but even if your are a student or other researcher trying to find more on the Chowans you are also welcome to join the site and have some conversations with us. There are many of us who are quite knowledgeable and would be happy to direct you to good sources of information.

*note* When you select join site, it will come to my email for me to manually accept new members. Previously my settings were to automatically accept everyone, but recently spammers invaded the site, so I just need to verify that you are a human. Once approved you will receive an invitation to complete your profile, which will give you full access to the site. Thank you everyone!

About Me

I'm an Eastern North Carollina farm irl who's a wife, mother, and grandmother.  I enjoy old things, including the research of old dead relatives.  I'm thrilled with the discovery of new "old things".

Where are you from?

Nash County, NC

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

After receiving the results of my DNA testing from ancestry.com, I found that 10% of my results were "uncertain".   In other words, there's small traces of a population with no definitive proof as to watch that 10% matches.   Having always been told that we had "Indian blood", I got a little more excited to think that this was actually true. (I have never made the claim myself, but would be proud to claim this if it were part of my ancestry.)  I just want to see if I can discover a little more about some of the dead-ends I have reached in my tree.  In addition, the maternal side of my father's family is rooted right there in the Gates and Hertford County area.

Here's another tidbit.  My husband, Timothy John, is a descendant of the "Nansemond John Bass".  He was not even aware of his ancestry until my research on his family made the connection to the research done on the early Basse's of Jamestown, VA and then down to NC.

About Me

Aho!  My name is Troy J. Hines, and my maternal family "home" is Halifax and Warren County, and we are direct blood descendants of the families of the Haliwa-Saponi Coummunity (Qualls, Davis, Daniel, Hardy, Johnson, Jones, Whitehead, McWilliams, & Silver families)...  As I have been researching my family history in depth, I found that we are also direct descendants of families that migrated from the Albermarle Sound and Pasquotank areas (Reading, Benton, & Hendricks families) to Halifax County, NC.  I look forward to learning how our family trees, stories, and love for our Native culture intertwine on our journey to learn more about the origins of our Chowanoke descendants...

Where are you from?

Washington, DC

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

My Native roots include the Cherokee, Saponi, Tuscarora people, and as I realized that in Virginia and NC, Native families, and mixed Native families, attempted to marry within other Native families... my research led me to my Reading & Benton ancestors in Albemarle, NC... as I continued to research I learned that the Benton's are one of the possible Chowanoke surnames... It makes complete sense to me, that as the Albemarle Sound gives birth to the Chowanoke & Roanoke Rivers, the survivng Native people of Siouan, Algonquin, & Iroquoian descent found each other along their journeys for survival... Thank you all in advance for the warm welcome...

About Me

After WWII, my parents settled in Southern California. Born in 1960 I went to the local Catholic Elementary School, then to a Catholic  'College Prep' high school (which means there was NO woodshop class). Having started playing low brass in 3rd grade, I earned a scholarship to the University, but Anthropology captured me. I helped H'mong villagers from Vietnam assimilate (and was exposed to leperosy in the process). Also I spent many afternoons at the Veterans Admin Hospital gathering stories and world-views from veterans from several wars. I love history and mysteries.

Where are you from?

Garden Grove, CA

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

My parents and us kids grew up separated from our kin in New York (Mom's side) and Oklahoma (Dad's side). My brother and a Cousin who is a professional Genealogist have met (yay facebook!) and have traced, but not nailed down with Documentation, our Paternal Grandfathers back to Samuel Freeman (Who has a D.A.R. marker on his grave) back to John Freeman circa 1650 - of course with all the William's and John's it's a mystery to be solved.

"Everyone" in my Dads family "knows" we're part Native American - but my grandparents could only say that it was a few generations back and probably Cherokee. I am curious enough to have ordered a Y-DNA test. Since I was raised "knowing" were part Native American I've always tried to pin it down. I have a deep-seated need to connect with my Ancestors, and desire to be a part of this Culture.

Wouldn't it be great to connect with a lost branch of the Family?!

Having discovered Girls, I broke my mothers heart and did not become a priest. Several careers have gone by and I currently work in a Gun Store. I collect old Russian WWi / WWII rifles and am an avid shooter.
It started off as a therapy for apnea & snoring, but I play and build Didgeridoo's. And yes, it stopped the apnea & snoring.
I also do Lapidary (grinding, polishing and mounting of semi-precious stones, like Turquoise) and make by own sterling silver settings.
After an 8 year journey into my own heart, and many many bruises, I earned my Black Belt in Ninjutsu (yep, like Ninja) - a Warriors martial art with no Sport application - from a USMC Captain who went on to help re-vamp the USMC hand-to-hand system.
I have BiPolar disorder, and am the Patron Saint of Taking my Medicine!

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

My mom is a Bass and I have been doing research since 2004 and believed that I was a descendant of the Nansemond Tribe; but according to Fred Bright (Genealogist of the Nansemond Tribe) I am a descendant of the Chowanoke Tribe after he looked at my Tree. Edward Bass of Virginia married a Christianized Indian Maiden. Edward and Mary left Virginia and lived with the Chowanoke in North Carolina. This is documented in the Bible of John Bass who was Edwards brother. John Bass married a Nansemond woman.

About Me

Where are you from?

Hampton, Va

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

My Maternal Grandmother was Susie Bryant and her brother was Joshua Bryant from Hertford, N.C. Their Mother was Susan Piland who died young, well before my grandmother married and eventually lived in Portsmouth, Va.
My family has always stated that she was part "Chowan" however, it has been very hard to research this due to lack of records beyond my grandmother, only very few finds on Ancestory. com for Susan Piland. My Mothers family all have jet black hair, deep brown eyes and darker complexions.
(On one Employment Record, Joshua Bryant was listed as Black - but I know this was typical for darker skinned Americans, especially Native Americans).
This is a part of my heritage that I am very curious about and would like to learn all I can about the Chowanokes.

Why do you want to be a member of this online community?

About Me

I have been retired for many years and for the past few years have enjoyed researching  my family history. It seems every where I turn another brick wall appears in trying to locate the names of my ancestors with a few exceptions. Those exceptions are my Gx9 Grandparents Edward Basse and Mary Tucker with that lineage going through my Gx4 Grandparents Benjamin Richardson and Mary Bass. Another set of Gx3 Grandparents are Isaac Richardson and Milberry Lynch. I also believe that DNA could break down some brick walls only if the participants are willing to divulge their results to each other.

I enjoy going to the range and target practicing,  horseback riding, canoeing, hiking. I love wildlife and Nature, walking barefoot in the creek. I love walking in the rain, and talking to the Creator. I love going to Pow-wow's and meeting old friends, and creating new ones.

I love crafts, I especially love crafting with gourds.

I am a simple person, and  very down to earth. I don't like to be the center of attention, I just like to blend in.

Where are you from?

I live in Idaho

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?

I grew up knowing of my Cherokee heritage, on my Mothers side. I started family search on my Fathers side, and it has brought me to the Chowanoke people.

I wish to learn all I can about the Chowanoke. It would be a great thing for us to prove our heritage, and try to become recognized as a Tribe. For we are not extinct, we are surviviors of the Chowanoke and can prove it with research.

I am from the Freeman/Hoyter line.

About Me
I am 32 years old. My great grandmother Bernice Clark came from Edenton, North Carolina near the Bennett's Creek reservation. I am a black woman. I am also descended from Seminole and Creek people. I have learned a lot about the Indian side of my family through a combination of visions, Google searches, and library books in California that are extremely old. I have 3 sons named Colin, Joseph, and Charles. Colin is of Cuban & Choctaw descent on his dad's side (Anderson's). Joseph and Charles (twins) are descended from Geronimo on their dad's side.

Why are you researching the Chowanoke?
I was doing research a few years ago after I started learning things about the Indian sides of my family in visions. Before that I was solely researching the African/Jewish side.
